Cognitive Coaching? is a process, a set of strategies, and a way of thinking that supports the ongoing development of individuals and organizations, as they become increasingly self-directed and reflective. Its mission is to produce self-directed persons with the cognitive capacity for excellence both independently and as members of a community. Self-directed people are self-managing, self-monitoring, and self-modifying. The results are stronger individuals within a team and better organizational teams overall. Cognitive Coaching? transforms conversations, and as such, is a powerful approach to enhancing teacher performance. At the heart of this training is the concept that we all have resources that enable us to grow and change from within. The person being coached, not the coach, evaluates what is good or poor, appropriate or inappropriate, effective or ineffective about his/her work. Cognitive CoachingSM gets to the core of what actually impacts teacher learning and growth: teacher cognition. Rather than attempting to “fix” isolated teacher behaviors, this approach enhances the cognitive processes that produce those behaviors. Coaches support and enhance long-term sustainable growth for teachers and success for their students.

Description:
SCSC Regional Spelling Bee is for students from pre-registered schools that have won first place in their local Spelling Bees. The school spelling bee coordinator should register one student for the regional bee after the local bee is completed. Please use as much of the student's information as known. Registration should include at least a phone number or email address to contact the student's home directly in case of a weather related postponement.

Description:
The SCSC Writing Contest gives students a chance to express themselves by writing fiction, non-fiction or poetry. This program was established to encourage the love of language and writing for all students and as a way to recognize the talented young writers in south central Minnesota. SCSC is partnering with Minnesota State University, Mankato on this program. Students in grades K-12 attending public, private or homeschools are eligible to enter. Up to three pieces per category and submission in multiple categories are welcome.

Description:
The Reading Academy offers participants an opportunity to read from one of several lists of books (see link below) and comment (2-3 sentences) online about each book. Then participants come together on June 21 and share ideas and comments about their readings. In the afternoon there is instruction on Increasing Reading Motivation. Each participant receives 25 Clock Hour Units. Lunch is on your own.
