SCSC promotes the Future City Competition (FCC), a national, cross-curricular program that enables students in grades 6–8 to do the things engineers do: identify problems, brainstorm ideas, design solutions, test and retest, build, and share the results.
Students spend approximately five months (September-January) completing the following deliverables: a 1,500-word city essay; a scale model of their city built from recycled materials; a four-part project plan; a 7-minute team presentation; and a Q&A session with judges (professional engineers who volunteer their time).
The first-place winner of FCC Minnesota's regional competition receives a free trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the National Future City Competition in February.
Minnesota public, private, and home schools, as well as organized youth groups (Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H, Boys & Girls Club, etc.), are welcome to form teams and compete in FCC. The registration fee is just $25 per school/organization (for any number of teams).
