SCSC Hosts Surf the Murph and Savage 100 Races

Beautiful Murphy-Hanrehan Park in Savage was the site of South Central Service Cooperative’s annual Surf the Murph race Oct. 19. The park has a loop course covering 16.7 miles. The race typically offers four distances including a 25K, marathon, 50K and 50-mile race. This year, to add to the excitement, the Savage 100, a 100K and 100 mile distance were also offered.

Surf the Murph and the Savage 100 attracted nearly 350 runners. Of those, 25 runners completed the 100 mile distance with finish times ranging from just under 19 hours up to 35 hours.

The course features glacial ridges, hilly terrain and an extensive lush forest. Four aid stations were scattered throughout the loop, fully stocked with all the runners’ favorite drinks and snacks.

Surf the Murph is known for having amazing volunteers and this year was no different. Incredible people came out at all hours of the day and night to help runners reach their goal of the finish line. Runners can get very tired putting one muddy foot in front of the other but when they are greeted by enthusiastic, costumed volunteers at the aid stations, it really lifts their spirits. Thank you to all the volunteers for providing an amazing support system!
The fun races have a unique Halloween theme. Many prizes are awarded for originality and best costume. This year some costumes winners included a magic 8 ball, Sonic the Hedgehog and Tails the Fox, and even Maleficent showed up to run! Surf the Murph 2020 will be held Oct. 24. View the website for more information on how to register or to sign up as a volunteer!
