Math Mania Names Tournament Champions

Despite a snowstorm delay in February and a pandemic in April, area students were able to complete individual and team competitions in the Math Mania Tournament sponsored by South Central Service Cooperative and Mankato Community Education and Recreation.

Top placing individuals included first place Mathias Barents, Mt. Olive Lutheran School; second place Alex Kleve, JWP; tied for third place Jaxon Miller, JWP and Maggie Graupman, LCWM; and tied for fourth place Grace MacPherson, homeschool and Cai Sheeran, JWP.

Team JWP-7, including students Madi Cowdin, Eric Daschner, Alex Kleve, Myles Kruger and Jaxon Miller, were named champions at the Math Mania Tournament. Mathias Barents was also awarded a first-place team medal as his test score (taken individually) tied with the first place team. Placing second was JWP-8 including Alexis Dahlberg, Landon Dimler, Cai Sheeran, Logan Thell and Lauren White. Grace MacPherson was also awarded a second-place team medal for her individual score on the team test. Tests were distributed via teachers at participating schools and teams collaborated via videoconference.

Students participating in the Math Mania Tournament had to solve clever, engaging and challenging problems on a variety of mathematical topics provided by the Math Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools.
