Participation in Academic Decathlon and Academic Pentathlon:

  • Promotes use of higher-level thinking skills
  • Prepares students for college and life skills
  • Fosters individual accountability/growth
  • Provides students with dynamic group/team interaction
  • Supports team spirit and the sense of belonging
  • Enables personal pride and success

Participation in Academic Decathlon and Academic Pentathlon changes the lives of students and offers them the opportunity to experience the rigors of team and individual competition. The curriculum addresses a number of national content and curriculum standards and tests students of all skill levels. Academic Decathlon consists of 10 events: economics, math, science, social science, literature, art, music, essay, speech and interview. Academic Pentathlon consists of five events: literature, mathematics, fine arts, science and social studies. Both teams consist of nine students: Three  “A” or honor students, three “B” or scholastic students, and three “C” or varsity students and alternates.

Teams advance through local, regional and state levels of competition. In many schools, the state competition team is determined in the winter or early spring, thus allowing more than nine students to be involved in each school’s program until the final team is selected. The state champions compete in the national finals. Most competitions, except for Academic Decathlon® state and national competitions and Academic Pentathlon® national competition, take place online in a virtual testing environment so there is no travel required for teams!

The theme for the 2019–2020 Academic Decathlon and Pentathlon season is In Sickness and in Health: An Exploration of Illness and Wellness.
