Students enjoyed a day of writing, creative thinking, and motivation.
Nearly 1,000 students, parents and educators from south central Minnesota gathered on March 7th and 8th for the 2007 Young Writer’s Conference at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, MN. Carol McCormick, professional storyteller and author of “A Bridge for Grandma” kicked-off the conference with a keynote highlighting the components of good writing. Carol is a former teacher and an accomplished presenter. After the opening session, students and their chaperones attended three, age appropriate sessions led by 30 authors, poets, educators, reporters, and students from south central Minnesota.
Students registered on-line for breakout sessions of their choice. Topics ranged from short story writing, creative word play, news story production, tongue twisters, fantasy writing, funky lettering and book making, to poetry, story telling, calligraphy, time travel writing, drawing and more.
Schools from 24 area districts including Belle Plaine; Blue Earth; Butterfield-Odin; Central-Norwood/Young America; Fairmont; GFW; Green Isle; Jordan; Le Sueur-Henderson; Maple River; Martin County West; McLeod West; MN New Country School; Montgomery-Lonsdale; New Prague; New Ulm; Nicollet; NRHEG; St. James; St. Clair; St. Peter; United South Central; Waseca, and several Mankato area schools (Franklin, Garfield, Monroe, Hoover, Dakota Meadows, Kennedy, Jefferson, Roosevelt, Washington, and Eagle Lake) were represented at the YWC.
“It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm, participation, and cooperation displayed by the students along with the unique and motivating sessions our educators presented at this year’s conference,” said coordinator Joyce Swenson. "We hope to see everyone at the 2008 Young Writer’s Conference where students will have more opportunities for unique 'hands-on' writing experiences."
