The Mankato Free Press, Fairmont Sentinel, and The New Ulm Journal sponsor the Spelling Bee for the South Central Region of Minnesota. Each student participating in the regional event has won their local district event. The winner goes on to the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. May 2930, 2008!
Counties covered by this event include: Blue Earth, Brown, Cottonwood, Faribault, Le Sueur, Martin, Nicollet, Sibley, Waseca, and Watonwan.
Forty-two students from area schools met March 4 at South Central College in North Mankato to determine the 2008 Spelling Bee regional winner. First place honors went to Nick Riordan, an eight grader from the Windom Public Schools. Nick will travel to Washington, D.C. to represent south central Minnesota at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May. Second place honors went to Jing Wang from Dakota Meadows, and third place honors went to Dugan Bradley from Loyola (Fitzgerald). Congratulations to all participants!
