DESCRIPTION

SCSC and the Mankato Free Press Spelling Bee will sponsor the Spelling Bee for the South Central Region of Minnesota. Each student participating in the regional event has won their local district event. The winner goes on to the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. -- the date in May, 2010 to be announced!

The deadline for registering schools in the program for the 2010 year is October 16 of 2009. All schools enrolling during the late enrollment period, October 17- December 18, 2009 will be subject to a late enrollment fee of $75 per school. PLEASE NOTE: Due to weather, the Regional Spelling Bee scheduled for February 9 WILL BE CANCELLED. The Regional Spelling Bee has been rescheduled for Thursday, February 18 beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Conference Center at South Central College in North Mankato.

This year’s Regional Spelling Bee will be held, February 9, 2010, 5:30-8:00 p.m. in the Conference Center at South Central College in North Mankato. Counties covered by this event include: Blue Earth, Brown, Cottonwood, Faribault, Le Sueur, Martin, Nicollet, Sibley, Waseca, and Watonwan.

Forty-three fifth through eighth grade students from southern Minnesota participated in this event last year. First place honors went to Daniel Halvorson a home school student from Mankato. Daniel will travel to Washington, D.C. to represent south central Minnesota at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May. Second place honors went to Dugan Bradley from Loyola in Mankato and third place honors went to James Skoog from St. Peter Middle School. The winning word was heliolatry which means “sun worship.” Congratulations to all participants!
