DESCRIPTION

South Central Service Cooperative is pleased to partner with the Freshwater Society and the other cooperative members of The Minnesota Service Cooperatives (MSC) to host the sixth annual Water is Life art contest. Students have the opportunity to bringing awareness to the severity of our freshwater resources by finding artistic ways to express the importance and significance of water. The art contest is open to all pubic, private and home schooled 9th-12th grade students within the service cooperative areas. Six $500 scholarships will be awarded to the students who best express the theme “Water is Life.”

Art projects may be submitted in four categories: flat surface (painting, drawing, or graphic design), photography, three-dimensional (sculpture) or the new category of short video. Entries may celebrate the beauty of water and its importance to human life and the natural world, or lament on its abuse and degradation. Semi-finalists are selected at regional events in Minnesota and advance to state competition where the scholarship winners are announced.

The Freshwater Society, is a non-profit environmental education organization established in 1968, who encourages the understanding and responsible use of freshwater resources. It has built this contest around a Les Kouba original, Water is Life, which they feel celebrates the beauty of water, laments its environmental degradation, and describes the human impact on the natural world.
