SCSC FALL 2009 CHESS TOURNAMENT

Students Make Their Moves at SCSC Chess Tournament

More than 30 students competed in the 2009 South Central Service Cooperative (SCSC) Fall Chess Tournament on Nov. 14 at the SCSC Conference Center.

Students from Chaska, Jordan, Lake Crystal, Lonsdale, Mankato, Montgomery, Norwood Young America, New Prague, Northfield and St. Peter, Minnesota; Sibley, Iowa; and Garretson, South Dakota attended this stimulating day of chess.

All students were guaranteed four rounds of chess regardless their skill level or standing. In some divisions, tie-breaking games against the clock were necessary to determine final tournament placement. The day concluded with an awards ceremony honoring first through third place winners in each division: primary, elementary, middle and upper. All students received certificates, complimentary prizes, and great memories of this tournament!

More than a dozen of these students were attending their first official chess tournament. First time players, although timid initially, unanimously agreed that they would be back for more! The tournament was designed to be all-inclusive and to eliminate no one. Camaraderie developed immediately that spanned all ages. Tournament coordinator, Mary Hillmann, was thrilled with the number of players in attendance.

“It is always a great sight to see students arrive early on a Saturday morning to spend their day playing chess,” said Hillmann.

Parents and coaches were there too to root for their students.

“I love watching their minds work and for them to see others enjoying chess,” said one parent.
