Young Writer's Conference

Dennis Warner will Kick off the SCSC Young Writer’s Conference

South Central Service Cooperative is proud to announce the 2006 Young Writer’s Conference (YWC) hosted by Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, MN. This year’s conference has a NEW format—designed with the students in mind! The two-day conference will be held on Tuesday, March 7, 2006 for grades 3–9, and on Wednesday, March 8, 2006 for grades 3–6. Thursday, March 9, 2006 as alternate date in case of inclement weather.)

Dennis Warner, Americana singer, songwriter & author of “Beads on One String” will kick off the conference with a unique blend of music, humor and expressive lyrics. Dennis has performed in 50 U.S. states and brings with him great songs, contagious energy and an engaging personality! “Beads on One String” as a song and a book —is a meaningful and fun way for children to see the positive effects of the “connectedness” we share in today’s world while learning about the negative effects of bullying.

This year’s conference will focus on students in grades 3–9 only. More than 25 educators will be on hand to present on a wide range of “writing” topics from story telling to short story writing, creative word play, calligaphy, news story production, entertainment writing, creative advertising, screenplays and travel writing, science writing, personal scrapbook journals, photography, blogging and more. Students will start their day at the opening session with Dennis Warner and will move to three separate one-hour sessions (of their choice.) This year’s sessions have been divided by grade category to make the student choices easier and to allow for more “age appropriate” presentations.

Students in grades 7–9 are invited to attend on Tuesday, March 7th and students in grades 3–6 are invited to attend on either March 7th or March 8th. By adding more session options for the younger students, our hope is students will benefit from smaller session sizes and more personalized instruction. By combining elementary and junior high sessions on the same day, we hope to help schools with the cost for busing.

The registration fee for the Young Writer’s Conference is $22 per student—adult chaperones/guardians attend free of charge. Pre-registration is required for both students and chaperones/guardians. Sessions are filled on a first-come basis—please register early—the registration deadline is February 24, 2006.
