Special Education Deaf/Hard of Hearing Families Enjoy a "Family Getaway" Come learn, relax and connect with other families who can relate to your experience! The fifth annual “Family Getaway Weekend” for Region 9 families of children who receive special education services as deaf/hard of hearing learners will be held March 1011, 2006 at the Holiday Inn, Mankato. The event is an opportunity for parents to increase their knowledge of issues related to the communication and social/emotional development of their children. It is also a time for parents to share their experiences in parenting a deaf/hard of hearing child and for families to have fun together. Families will arrive Friday evening for a pizza feast before parents listen to the presentations by Dr. Susan Pearson, M.D, “Medical Evaluation of Hearing Loss” and Tracy Bell Koster, Deaf/Hard of Hearing Services and the Region 9 Low Incidence Staff, “Up to the Minute in Region 9”; and students enjoy “Fun and Games” with the teachers of the deaf/hard of hearing and a “Get Acquainted Activity” with school counselors, Pat Hall and Julie Harrison. The following morning parents will be able to hear Dr. Ron Lybarger present “Psychological Evaluations and Children with Hearing Loss”, while students participate in “Making Balloon Characters” with Tom and Mary Rudie and “Safety” with Officer Alan Schmidt. This will be a day to socialize, learn, and enjoy. Registration is limited; if you have questions, please call Loree Brown at 507-389-1425. The “Family Getaway” experience is made possible with financial support from several sources: The Minnesota Department of Education-Region 9 Low Incidence Project, Life track Resources-Greater Mankato Assessment Service (GMAS) a project funded through a state grant from the Minnesota Department of Human Services, Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services Division, Region 9 Teachers of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing, MN Deaf/Hard of Hearing Service, Interagency Early Intervention Committees of Blue Earth-Nicollet, Brown, Waseca and Watonwan Counties, Mapleton Sertoma Club, Key City Sertoma Club, Mankato Sertoma Club, and Mankato Sunrise Lion’s Club. > Next Special Education Article: Work-Skills Competition DayStudents “Gear Up” for the May 18th Date! |
