Gear Up for the 2005 Work-Skills Competition!

The second annual Work-Skills Competition Day “Gearing Up for Your Future” will be held Thursday, May 19, 2005 from 8:00 a.m.–1:45 p.m. The event will take place at South Central Technical College in North Mankato.

This event was developed for students with disabilities in grades 10–12 to give them an opportunity to proudly demonstrate all the work skills they have learned over the last few years. It's a great day of learning, recognition and fun!

The skills competition categories for this year include:
Application writing
Interviewing
Problem solving
General knowledge

The day will also include awards, door prizes, entertainment, lunch and snacks.

Last year's event was a great success with 92 students participating from nine surrounding schools. The south central region was a great support for this event—44 members volunteered as judges and 42 businesses donated over 280 raffle prizes that were awarded as prize bags to every youth that attended.

During last year's event students were given a job application form to complete independently. The judges scored their application on neatness, correctness, and overall appearance of the application.

In the area of interviewing, interviewers scored students on their responses to questions, appearance, attitude, and knowledge about the job they were interviewing for.

Students were also asked to solve problems they might encounter on the job. They were judged on their grammar use, poise, self-confidence, attitude and quality of solutions the students suggested.

General knowledge was also tested. Students took a written test that showed their basic knowledge of job skills and work-related issues. Readers were provided for this portion of the competition for those students that needed someone to read the test to them.
