The Academic Decathlon competition was created to provide opportunities for students to experience the challenges of rigorous team and individual academic competition. A new theme of study is established every year with topics that are relevant, current and challenging. This year’s theme is
Exploring the Ancient World, and the Super Quiz portion of the competition focuses on Astronomy.
Students travel to Cragun’s in Brainerd for the statewide competition, to be held February 28 March 1. Students will compete in ten events including the composition of an essay based on the theme, the performance of a prepared speech and an impromptu speech, and participation in an interview before a panel of community volunteer judges.
A South Dakota team from Canton also traveled to Mankato on February 1st for their first experience in academic decathlon competition. This premiere national scholastic competition for high school students is a new academic challenge for the state of South Dakota. Students and coaches at Canton are hoping more districts will join in South Dakota to provide for a challenging state competition next year.
Winners of the state competition will compete at the USAD nationals competition to be held April 1316, 2005 in Chicago. Good luck to all students and coaches in the state and national competitions!
