Academic Decathlon Teams Prepare for State Meet—
Winners Advance to Nationals in Honolulu, Hawaii

On January 30, 2007 approximately 100 students from 10 high school teams competed in the Regional Academic Decathlon Competition in Mankato at the Midwest Wireless Civic Center. Participating high schools included Avalon School, Lake Crystal-Wellcome-Memorial, MACCRAY, Mankato East, Mankato West, Red Rock Central, St. Peter, Lakeville North, Windom, and Canton, South Dakota.

The participating schools are divided into two divisions, small and large schools, with the top five teams from each division advancing to the state competition. In the large school division Mankato West High School was the regional first place winner, second place went to St. Peter High School and the third place team was Lakeville North High School. In the small school division Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial High School was the regional first place winner, second place went to Avalon School and the third place team was Windom High School. State competition will be held at Cragun’s Resort in Brainerd March 5-6, 2007, and the state winners will have an opportunity to compete nationally in Honolulu, Hawaii in April, 2007. There will be an on-line competition again this year for the small school division which runs concurrently during the National event.

Teams (A, B & C GPA levels) compete in six content areas (Language & Literature; Music; Art; Mathematics; Economics; Social Studies); the Super Quiz and at the State level, Speech, Interview and Essay against teams from similarly sized districts. At Regional and State levels, the top scores in each test in each division receive medals.
