Mankato West High School Students Impress Competition at USAD Nationals—San Antonio, Texas

Minnesota Academic Decathlon sent nine students from Mankato West High School to the USAD National Competition in San Antonio, Texas on April 26th–29th to represent Minnesota. Mankato West impressed everyone with a score of 34,481 points and was ranked twenty-four out of thirty-nine teams overall. In addition, the team was ranked tenth out of thirteen in the division two (medium) schools. This year’s theme was “European Renaissance.” The Super QuizTM portion of the competition focused on European Renaissance: “Renewal and Reform.”

Several Mankato West students ranked nationally in the top fifteen:

  • Tom Johnson placed 12th in language and literature competition, 15th in music competition, 14th in art competition, 10th in math competition, 13th in economic competition, earning the honor of “highest scoring Minnesota student” with an overall score of 6,461. Congratulations Tom!
  • Alex Gaterud received a silver medal at nationals in speech with a score of 943 and placed 12th in essay competition.
  • Lisa Fralish placed 12th in music competition and 15th in art and math competition.
  • Travis Swenson placed 14th in math and music competition.
  • Lukas Forseth placed 7th in music competition and 12th in art competition.
  • Ajay Kapadia placed 12th in speech competition.
  • Charles McLaughlin placed 14th in math competition.
  • Nate Wolf placed 12th in math competition.
  • Jake Swede placed 12th in math competition and 9th in speech competition.

“China and Its Influence on the World” is the new competition theme for 2006-2007, with the Super QuizTM focus: An Introduction to Climatology. The 2007 USAD national competition will be held in Hawaii. Please visit the USAD website at www.usad.org for curriculum information.
