Teamwork & Quick Recall Evidenced at 2006 Knowledge Bowl Regional & State Meets

March 23, 2006 at the National Guard Armory in New Ulm —27 teams, representing 19 area school districts, competed at the regional Midwest Wireless Senior High Knowledge Bowl meet sponsored by the South Central Service Cooperative (SCSC). The top 5 teams advanced to State Competition April 25 & 26 at Cragun’s Resort in Brainerd, where 48 teams from across Minnesota competed for State honors.

State Competition
The top forty-eight teams, out of nearly 800 across the state, competed at the Minnesota Service Cooperative’s State Knowledge Bowl™ Competition in Brainerd April 25–26th. Twenty-four teams compete in two tiers, based on school size.

Tuesday night, after a welcome banquet at Craguns’ resort, teams completed their written round of sixty questions. At the end of the round, teams of five students were ranked in order of score, to begin their five oral rounds Wednesday morning. Each oral round consisted of 45 questions, with only four students participating per team for each round. All questions are random subject matter, including questions on geometry, current events, ancient history, literature, various fields of science, grammar, American history, the arts, and Minnesota history.

In the oral rounds, speed is of the essence, as computerized equipment will designate who hit their answer strip first. At the end of each oral round, the scores were tallied, and power ranked again, so the top teams competed against each other.

The top six teams in each tier receive awards. A Heritage Spirit Award is also given to the team in each tier that best shows the qualities and conduct becoming to a champion competitor—positive attitude toward all members of the team, other teams, positive attitude in winning or losing, and overall conduct. The winners of this award were chosen by the teams, the readers, and the judges in the competition rooms. The meet ended with awards at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Through an academic partnership, SCSC has named their Knowledge Bowl program the Midwest Wireless Knowledge Bowl of South Central Minnesota. Knowledge Bowl is an interdisciplinary event in which teams of students compete in written and oral rounds of competition requiring quick recall, problem solving skills, critical thinking skills and teamwork. Questions are taken from the standard curriculum for the grades 9–12. Teams participate in invitational, sub-regional, regional and state events. This competition provides a format for student growth centered on academics.
