MATH MASTERS

It All Adds Up to Victory for Area Math Students
By Melanie Schmidt

Excitement filled the air as area students took their appointed places at rows of long tables May 2 at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato for the annual Math Masters Competition. With sharp pencils and calculators in hand, area fifth graders from 14 southern Minnesota school districts prepared for a total of eight written exams. In all, 33 teams participated for a total of 165 students.

Just before noon, the contest was complete and it was time to the announce winners! Jim Fedson and Brandi Martin from Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Minnesota were honored guests at this year’s event and presented winners with ribbons, medallions, and plaques to honor their victory!

Plans are underway for the 2009 Math Masters season. The sixth-grade event will be held in March 2009 and fifth grade competition will be held in May 2009.
