YOUNG WRITER'S CONFERENCE

Students Get Creative at SCSC Annual Young Writer’s Conference

On May 7 and 8 at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, nearly 1,000 area students attended the 2007 Young Writer’s Conference —many of them aspiring journalists, playwrights, poets, authors, and illustrators. Whatever their interests, all students enjoyed a day of hands-on learning activities such as: short-story writing, creative word play, news story production, fantasy writing, funky lettering, book making, poetry, drawing, and storytelling.

The keynote speaker for this two-day event was Carol McCormick, professional storyteller and author of “A Bridge for Grandma.” Her opening session highlighted the components of good writing and set the tone for the day.

After the keynote presentation, students attended three breakout sessions on topics of their choice, which the students registered for online prior to the event. Over 30 authors, poets, educators, reporters, and college students from south central Minnesota offered attendees a variety of topic choices. We look forward to another great event in 2008!
