WATER IS LIFE ART CONTEST

Le Sueur-Henderson Student Earns Scholarship at State “Water is Life” Art Contest

On May 9 at the Gray Freshwater Institute on the shores of Lake Minnetonka, Luke Lieske from Le Sueur-Henderson High School —representing the south central area—was named one of three state winners in the annual “Water is Life” Art Contest, sponsored by the Freshwater Society of Minnesota, along with Sishir Bommakanti —Eden Prairie High School and Austin Loeffler—Watershed High School. Each state winner received a $1,000 scholarship, in addition to two honorable mention scholarships awarding $500 each to Viktoriya Ishchuk—Rochester-Mayo High School and Megan Siegle—Chaska High School for a total of $4,000 in scholarships. “The artwork was outstanding, making the judges’ role very difficult, and resulted in the addition of honorable mention awards” stated Joan Nephew Freshwater Society Program Director.

This event asks students to focus on the theme “Water is Life” through conservation, degradation and contamination, and futuristic resourcefulness. Their interpretation of this theme can be expressed through a variety of media including pencil, pastel, acrylics, photography, and sculpture.

The regional “Water is Life” Art Contest was held April 18 at the Carnegie Art Center in Mankato, where six semi-finalists from south central Minnesota were chosen from a pool of 31 art pieces representing five area schools. These students earned the opportunity to compete at the state level. Congratulations to semi-finalists Anna Fixsen, Ashley Haas, Luke Lieske and Joe Stuewe—Le Sueur-Henderson HS; Alison Wilson—Maple River HS; and Andrew Forsyth—Mankato West HS.
