1^st Annual – “Work-Skills Competition Day”

“Gear Up for Your Future” at the 1^st Annual South Central Minnesota Work-Skills Competition Day on Thursday, May 20, 2004 from 8:00 a.m.–1:45 p.m. at South Central Technical College, North Mankato.  Special education students in grades 10–12 will have the opportunity to showcase their job-seeking and job-keeping skills in four categories: application writing, interviewing, problem-solving and general knowledge.  Awards, door prizes and entertainment will round out the competition. The South Central Service Cooperative Perkins Consortium in collaboration with area Community Transition Interagency committees, South Central Technical College and Region 9 CSPD Project, have created a challenging and rewarding event for special education students to work on the skills required for successful transition from school to work.  Students will compete and gain first-hand knowledge while practicing the following skills: 

• Application writing is intended to give students confidence and practice in accurately completing application forms.
• Interviewing will provide a role-playing setting for students to try out the skills necessary to participate in a satisfactory job interview. 
• Problem-Solving will ask students to demonstrate skills necessary to solve problems that could arise in a job situation.
• General Knowledge will assess the student’s basic knowledge of job skills and work-related issues.
