Ten Educators To Be Honored With Awards For Teaching Excellence

By Elyse Anderson

On Oct. 17, the Center for Academic Excellence will congratulate classroom teachers and academic coaches at the 11th annual WEM Outstanding Educator Awards Brunch. The event will be held at the Oak Ridge Conference Center in Chaska, where each honoree will be presented with a crystal apple and will take a moment to briefly share about their experience as an educator. Each recipient will also be awarded $10,000 from the WEM Foundation.

Two honorees are named in each of three categories: Teacher Achievement Awards, recognizing exemplary teachers who support, inspire and assist students to attain greater learning as evidenced by student achievement; Academic Coach of the Year Awards, recognizing classroom teachers that are exemplary coaches of student teams who participate and compete in academic challenges endorsed by the Minnesota Academic League Council; and Ethics in Education Awards, recognizing exemplary educators who embody ethical behavior and promote ethical development for students through classroom or school activities, policies or curriculum.

In addition to the six statewide honorees, 10 additional educators have been named as regional honorees for 2009 to receive awards totaling $10,000:

The WEM Educator Awards program was created by the WEM Foundation and is administered by the Center for Academic Excellence, in partnership with the service cooperative members of The Minnesota Service Cooperatives (MSC). The WEM Foundation supports teachers and their important role in helping all children achieve academically. The awards program, now in its eleventh year, has helped recognize education’s often “unsung heroes” and educators who daily meet the challenges and opportunities of teaching in a variety of settings.

Educators are nominated by students, students’ parents, colleagues or community members. Those who accept the nomination provide additional information for review and consideration by the Center for Academic Excellence and a blue ribbon selection panel, which reviews and ranks the nominees.

Nominations are currently underway for the 2010 WEM Outstanding Educator Awards Program. To nominate a deserving educator or learn more about the WEM Outstanding Educator Awards, visit www.mncae.org.
