State Autism Network
By Loree Brown

The South Central Service Cooperative hosted the State Autism Network, entitled Comprehensive Autism Planning System (CAPS) for individuals with ASD: Integrating Best Practices Throughout the Student’s Day on October 22 & 23 at the Best Western Hotel, North Mankato, MN.

This conference provided information on an innovative system of developing and implementing a meaningful, individualized program for each student with ASD. This model is known as the Autism Planning System. This tri-component system contains (a) an Underlying Characteristics Checklist, (b) the Ziggurat Intervention, and (c) the Comprehensive Autism Planning System. Its structure fosters consistent use of supports to ensure student success as well as data collection to measure that success. Compatible with current trends in education, including NCLB, RTI, and SWAPBS, CAPS is simple and easy to use.

Presenters were Brenda Smith Myles, Ph.D., Chief of Programs and Development of the Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence, and an associate professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Kansas. Barry G. Grossman, Ph.D., is a licensed school psychologist and member of the Ziggurat Group in Dallas, TX. Ruth Aspy, Ph.D., is a licensed school psychologist, director of early autism program in a school district in TX, and member of the Ziggurat Group.
