Math Masters Compete in Mankato

South Central Service Cooperative, in conjunction with Math Masters of Minnesota, hosted the 2024 Regional Math Masters Competition at Bethany Lutheran College March 8 for 180 sixth graders representing 35 teams from 15 area schools. Students competed individually and as teams on eight sets of mathematical problems.

Top finishers in the Fact Drill: Aubrey Solheid, St. James;Grayson Klaverkamp, Belle Plaine; Celia Pratt, Dakota Meadows, Mankato; Declan Schroeder, St. James; Everett Greisen, Le Sueur-Henderson; Keyun Wu, St. Clair; Victoria Bruns, Waterville-Elysian-Morristown; and Beckett Larson, Belle Plaine.

Individual Test awards went to Celia Pratt, Asher Sandmann and Teague Kahmann, Dakota Meadows, Mankato; Charles Galle, Milo Wachal and Kolby Lindquist, Waseca; Ben Drusemark, Dakota Meadows; Aiden Dhara, Belle Plaine; Luke Jeske, Waseca; and Brody Maxwell, Le Sueur-Henderson.

First Place Team Award went to Dakota Meadows 1. Team members include Celia Pratt, Jackson Davis, Devin Tholen, Ben Krusemark and Teague Kahmann. Second place went to Waseca 1. Team members include Charles Galle, Milo Wachal, Luke Jeske, Kolby Lindquist and Ryan Harguth. Third place went to LSH Gold. Team members include Brody Maxwell, EzraCarlen, Wesley Thieke, Charlie Klehr and Everett Greisen.

Teams participated from Belle Plaine, Dakota Meadows Middle School, Faribault, Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton, John Ireland School, Le-Sueur Henderson, New Ulm Area Catholic Schools, Nicollet, Randolph, St. Clair, St. Mary’s Sleepy Eye, St. Peter, St. James, Waseca and Waterville-Elysian-Morristown. 

Math Masters of Minnesota began as a fifth-grade math competition program in 1989 with teams from 44 schools taking part. In 1995, the competition was expanded to include sixth grade students. This year the competition will include a fourth-grade competition.

Math Masters is designed to promote excellence in critical thinking skills and problem solving abilities as well as recognizing students for academic effort and achievement. Generous support is provided by many statewide sponsors and local sponsorship from McDonalds.
